Conversation Analysis & Clinical Interaction

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to Conversation Analysis (CA), as an innovative method for the study of social interaction. After a brief explanation of some key concepts, including turn-taking, turn construction and conversational sequences, we will move on to examine video recordings of real-life interactions between healthcare professionals and patients in a variety of clinical settings, including primary care, specialties, Advance Care Planning and Genetic Counselling. We will explore how communication unfolds in the course of a consultation and how the quality of communication impacts upon decision making, patient satisfaction, and treatment adherence.
